IAR4D Learning cycles and value chain analysis, Nigeria

Context

In collaboration with IFDC, ICRA carries out several training workshops on IAR4D for Sub-Saharan Africa Challenge Program Task Forces in Nigeria, i.e. to establish IAR4D feasibility in Africa, characterize it and derive principles on how it should be implemented.

The workshops are meant to strengthen the capacity of the Task Force (TF) that aims to build Innovation Platforms (IPs) for improved land productivity in the Northern Guinea Savanna agro-ecological zone of the Kano-Katsina-Maradi Pilot Learning Sites of SSA-CP, with the final aim to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and pastoralists in the area.

Achievements to date

  • In November 2008, a first training workshop on Multi-actors Participatory Value Chains Analysis (PVCA) and Market Linkages was carried out.
  • In January 2009, a 2-week Training Workshop on Integrated Agricultural Research for Development (IAR4D) Learning Cycles was run, and in February a next one.
  • In June 2009, a one week Workshop on Team Work and Planning was held.
All workshops were run in Zaria and Kaduna, Nigeria, for the benefit of approximately 20 researchers. A next workshop is planned for January 2010 on Analysis and Reflection on Experiences of Innovation Platforms.
