Agricultural research for development (ARD)

ARD encompasses all efforts and approaches that improve the responsiveness and relevance of agricultural research, to ensure that agricultural research effectively addresses urgent development challenges and has an impact on rural livelihoods. ARD is agricultural research that has "development relevance", as well as "scientific relevance".

By itself, knowledge is not enough to ensure development. ARD therefore focuses on integrating new knowledge with innovation - where new technology, processes and institutions are brought into economic use for sustainable development.

This integration requires developing partnerships, linking research with other players in both the public and private sectors. These include advisory services, producers, private firms, civil society organisations and higher education.
